Rustic Pergola and Stonework | Easton, Connecticut

A natural and sustainable black locust pergola and arbor with custom trellises, granite steps connecting two separate patios, an enclosed garden plot, plantings and sod — all the bells and whistle for this total backyard transformation. Our goal here was to create a truly enchanting outdoor oasis that marries natural aesthetics with sustainable design. The transformation was completed with a meticulous arrangement of lush plantings bringing vibrance to the landscape.

Handcut log for pergola

Hand cut and debarked black locust. These black locust trees, an invasive species, were sourced from a site where their removal was required. We up-cycled them into an arbor and trellis, as well as a large pergola. The wood was hand-hewn and left raw, which will create warm, earthy tones as the black locust weathers, harmonizing with the surrounding landscape and creating an inviting and organic atmosphere.

Stone steps

Meandering stone stairway flanked with boulders found on-site. In the details, these steps became a functioning piece of artwork.

Stone patio

More formal patio area with large format, irregular granite slabs, pieced together with tight joints - almost every edge of each stone cut to fit seamlessly.

Natural and rustic inspired design elements create an organic feel. We finished this project with an organized enclosure to polish off the garden area. Sitting on the lower patio, underneath the black locust pergola overlooks the garden, creating a calm and peaceful ambiance where this family can connect with nature and watch their children play.

Our projects take tons of thought, planning, creativity, and craftsmanship. The time spent progressing to the final result is always worth it. Black locust is incredibly strong and rot resistant. It that will remain beautiful and withstand years of outdoor exposure, only increasing with character as it ages.
